This show will challenge your thoughts on the importance of articulation and also how occlusion, airway, and restorative treatment might affect your patients’ lives!

Dec 12, 2017

Todd and his daughter Emily, a newly graduated dentist, join us to talk about mentorship and growth.  What would you tell your daughter to do as a new dentist to obtain the skills she needs to be successful?  Is dentistry still a great profession for new grads?  We dive right in to these questions!

Nov 28, 2017

Dentists deliver more local anesthetic that just about any other health care profession.  Dental anesthetics are better today than they've ever been and yet we are still struggling to be predictable in our blocks.  Jon and Wes debunk some of the myths about anesthetic technique and shed some light into what you can do to increase your success.  We discuss some tips and products that may help you overcome the dreaded lower molar with irreversible pulpitis!  Hurry up and get numb- we’ve got work to do!

Nov 14, 2017

Dentistry as a whole is struggling with producing quality impressions…but just how bad is it?  A recent JADA article answers that question and we take a stab at some possible fixes.  Also, an endo article we stumbled upon a couple of months ago ends up being a real revelation as to how long we can really wait before putting crowns on endodontically treated teeth before failure rates go up.  How important is coronal seal?  Finally, we talk about how digital impressioning changed our retraction techniques and product recommendations.

Oct 31, 2017

Over the last year, we changed the way we look at wear and occlusal problems through a better understanding of how occlusion really works and how sleep problems may be causing some of our TMD patients to get worse!  We also learned about the most predictable ways to restore patients with challenging occlusal problems and it transformed the way we treatment plan- again!  Join us as we recap our journey over the last year as we continue to try to take it to the next level!

Oct 17, 2017

Darin Dichter teaches at Spear Education on how to treat the terminal dentition and we tap him to give us his thoughts on which options are best for these sometimes complex cases involving full-arch implant restorative.  We almost got into a full-on nerd fest when it came to discussing conus-type cases but kept it on track for an action packed show covering nearly all of the major material options in implant dentistry today!

Oct 3, 2017

We’ve been planning this one for a while because it’s a big one- how do we best bond composite to tooth?  We’ve done a lot of research to get to the bottom of this question and to give you specific product recommendations to help you make the best decisions.  And make sure you check out the show notes to read some of the research that got us to our conclusions!

Sep 19, 2017

Brad the Dental Lab guy returns to share his knowledge of the pitfalls of full-arch implant dentistry.  What products should we be using or avoiding?  Is there anything new that will change the future of implant restorations?  What are the most common reasons the lab sees for failure and frustration?  And…if you’ve always wondered about the fastest way to destroy an edentulous ridge…we’ve got your solution covered!

Did you know the position of 8 and 9 can tell you what implant restoration your need in the mandible? Is adding more implants always the right move? WE want to save your implant case before it even starts this week on the Dental Guys.

Do you know which company developed the first 3.0 two-piece implant?  How about the world’s smallest two-piece zirconium implant?  You might be surprised to hear that both of these are the same company and that it’s not one of the names you might think of.  On this week’s show, we have the owner of this company, Argon Medical products, Ric Donaca. Ric will talk to us about innovative ideas in implant dentistry.  How did he create and now sustain a unique market in today’s product-driven competitive implant marketplace?  Also, what features does he believe make an implant successful? Join us!

It’s been a long road through this endo series but we are finally at the end- obturation!  With so many techniques out there to seal root canals, which one is the best- or is there a “best”?  We present details on what works and what the research says about the differences in obturation methods and sealers.  We then discuss protocols for core build-ups, who should do them, and when they should be done.  Finally, the controversy about posts is very real even to this day and we will weigh in on what we feel about the place of posts in dentistry.

Jul 25, 2017

Our series on endo continues as we discuss how to choose an endo file system.  We start with the history of endo files and different generations to show how advances in technology have changed techniques.  Then, we spend time discussing how to decide between all of the various systems out there- what features matter and which don’t.  And, finally, we give direct recommendations about what we think you might want to buy!

The Dental Guys get a chance this week to interview someone quite interesting: Dr. Sameer Puri, one of the founders of cerecdoctors.com as well as an educator at Spear Education. We got to record this one in the Spear studio and really got to know what makes Sameer excited about CEREC!  We talk about what CEREC can and can’t do, how it compares to the lab, and why he feels that CEREC is more than just a business decision but instead a passion that he wants to share with fellow doctors.  He challenged us to think differently about how we make technology decisions in our practices and also how chairside milling could change the way you do dentistry.  We asked him to make us believers in CEREC, and you’ll have to listen to see what came of that!

Jun 20, 2017

Our series on endo continues!  After our last two episodes, we are ready to get working length and start irrigation.  We will talk through the science and clinical techniques that help make endo more predictable and we will discuss some of the controversies such as lubricants, which irrigants to use, and many other important topics.

Jun 11, 2017

Our series on endo continues!  We begin with a hot topic: a discussion of microscopes vs. CBCT vs. loupes and their comparative effects on diagnosis and treatment outcomes.  Then, we discuss anesthesia, isolation, and access.  We provide a ton of clinical tips in this show that will help you do better endo!

May 23, 2017

Well, we have been thinking about a series on endodontics for a while now and so it begins!  This is the first in a series of episodes on endo.  We start with diagnosis and the science behind properly treatment planning for root canals.  We will dive into controversies on use of CBCT in endodontics and discuss pain control, antibiotic use, and cracked teeth.  We try to keep it relevant to the everyday decision making that we all deal with in our practices.  And as always, we will try to back our discussion up with research!

You’re listening to the dental guys episode 41: “Where are the Wannabes”.  Wes and Jon interview two dental students who spent a week in our offices seeing what we do.  Did they learn anything?  Does dental education need to change or is the foundation we receive in school enough to get you started?  Is apprenticeship still the future of advanced dental training or can you learn it all on YouTube?  We discuss it all this week on the dental guys!

Justin Moody and the Dentists, Implants, and Worms podcast is a great podcast show with some quality hosts that discuss implant dentistry as well as a wide variety of other topics.  We had the privilege of meeting them and having them interview us at the VOD conference earlier this year.  While we had never formally met, we felt we immediately connected with these guys as they are “doing it right” with Justin’s implant practice, which is a referral-based implant practice which does a lot of full arch comprehensive implant dentistry.

This discussion in split into two episodes, Episodes 39 and 40.

In Part 2, we dive deeper into the nuts and bolts of implants. We discuss what works and why it works and draw on Justin’s years of experience to help surgeons and restorative dentists alike to find out how to get better results with implants.  Justin also shares some surprising revelations about his struggles with getting quality from his referring dentists and how we can take it to the next level!

The dental guys traveled to Orlando Florida to cover the Academy of Osseointegration Annual Meeting.  Every year we attend this meeting we are continually challenged by research in the field of implants and new innovative ideas.

Based on this year’s meeting, it could be the beginning of the end of sinus lifts, bone grafts, and maybe even full arch zirconium.  Find out what this all means for your practice this week on the Dental Guys?

Mar 28, 2017

We welcome Russell Kirk of “The Business of Dentistry” podcast and Cory Glenn who is a well-known educator who focuses on implants, surgical guide planning, and 3D printing.  We get in to the longstanding debate about rural vs. big city practices-which is best for you?  We also discuss some of the top tips they have for your practice.  This was recorded live at the Voices of Dentistry podcast even in Nashville, TN.

Tarun Agarwal tells it like it is and that is why he belongs on our show.  This episode will challenge many of the things you take for granted about your dental practice and it will force you to think differently about what is possible.

Mar 7, 2017

For the Voices of Dentistry conference, we decided to pick a very mundane and non-controversial topic: “occlusion doesn’t matter”!  More specifically, we discuss why implant occlusion may not matter as much as we once thought.  We will build a case for this discussing research as well as applying this thought to the theory of the success of short implants.  Recorded live in Nashville, TN!

Feb 24, 2017

We go back to basics to discuss how to make your most common procedure more predictable.  Besides discussing tools, techniques, and work flows we also bring Brad the Dental Lab Guy in to discuss common problems he sees and how to make your preparation better.  It’s time to go back to school this week on The Dental Guys.
